Why the time of day determines the price

That a door opening on a Sunday morning costs more than on a Tuesday afternoon has a simple reason: at night, on weekends and on public holidays an emergency service is on standby around the clock – which means higher staff costs. This is only reputable if the surcharge is communicated transparently and in advance. That is exactly the difference between a fair fixed price and a rip-off: with us you hear the final price on the phone, before we even set off. There is no nasty surprise once the door is open.

Why “from €15” adverts are a trap

Bait offers with dumping prices are the most common scam in the locksmith trade. The advertised mini price – if it applies at all – only covers the bare call-out. On site, surcharges are then added one after another: for the weekend, for the time of day, for supposedly necessary special tools, for every quarter-hour of labour started. In the end you face a bill of several hundred euros that has nothing to do with the advertised €15.

Particularly devious: many of these providers aren't based in Frankfurt at all but run a nationwide call centre that forwards the job to any subcontractor. So you know neither who is coming nor what it will cost in the end. A fair provider instead gives you a binding total price on the phone – and sticks to it.

How to recognise a reputable locksmith

• A binding fixed price already on the phone – no vague “from” figures, no “we'll see on site”
• Call-out and VAT included – separately itemised call-out costs are a warning sign
• A local contact – not an anonymous call centre forwarding to changing subcontractors
• Damage-free opening as the rule – a professional opens a latched door without damage instead of reaching straight for the expensive drill
• Verifiable reviews and an ADAC partnership – real reviews with name and date, not an anonymous sea of stars

What to do if you've already been ripped off

If you have already signed or paid a grossly inflated invoice, not all is lost. A price that is in stark disproportion to the service can be deemed unconscionable. Ask for a detailed invoice, try not to pay disputed amounts in cash on the spot, and seek advice from the consumer advice centre (Verbraucherzentrale Hessen).
