Immediate checklist: the first steps

1. Stay calm and don't touch anything. Try not to walk through the flat – you could destroy evidence.
2. Call 110. The police in Frankfurt are reachable around the clock on 110.
3. Leave if there's danger. If the intruders may still be inside, leave the flat and wait in a safe place.
4. Document the damage. Photograph for the insurance once the police give the go-ahead.
5. Inform your insurer. Report the burglary to your contents insurance promptly.

Reporting the crime – how it works in Frankfurt

You can file a report at any police station in Frankfurt. In Hessen you can also do it conveniently via the Hessen online police station (onlinewache.polizei.hessen.de). Describe as precisely as possible what, when and where it happened and whether there were witnesses.

Free security advice from the police

Little known but valuable: the police offer free crime-prevention advice on security technology. Frankfurt has a dedicated advice centre for this. That way you avoid unnecessary or ineffective purchases and learn which protection really works.
